What Is Inverter Technology In Washing Machine: Inverter Washing Machine

When we hear the term ” Inverter Technology In Washing Machine” Or simply ” Inverter Washing Machine“, we just assume that, Oh this washing machine has an inverter in it. It will run on an inverter even when there is no power. Let me tell you that whatever you are assuming is wrong. So let’s find out What is inverter technology in washing machine and how does it work.

First of all, let me clear this big misconception. The inverter washing machine does not run when there is no power. What the inverter technology in washing machines does is that it saves power for you. Saving power means low electricity bills and low electricity bills mean more benefits to you. Is not it?

Inverter technology would not let you run your washing machine when there is no power. This is a technology to save power by optimizing the motor speed.

What Is Inverter Technology In Washing Machines?

Before I explain about what is inverter technology in washing machines, let me give you a brief about why do we really need inverter technology in washing machines.

Let’s take the example of a car. When more speed is required, you press the accelerator. Right? when you press the accelerator more fuel goes into the engine. So ultimately your car will burn more fuel only when you need more speed and power. Otherwise, it will only use minimum power.

inverter technology in washing machine

Now let’s talk about a washing machine. In a traditional washing machine, the motor and the drum rotates at a constant speed irrespective of how many clothes you are washing. Those clothes could have been washed even if the drum is rotating at a much lower speed. But since the motor is rotating at a constant speed irrespective of load, it’s a waste of power.

What an inverter technology in a washing machine does is that it optimizes the drum rotation speed based on the wash load. Fewer clothes mean lower speed and more clothes means high speed. So the amount of power you consume is directly proportional to the amount of cloth you wash.

How Does Inverter Washing Machine Work?

By now, we have understood that inverter technology just optimizes the motor or drum rotation speed. To optimize the rotation speed, inverter technology uses a variable speed motor so that the motor speed can be varied. This technology uses numerous sensors to detect the load size.

Whenever those sensors detect the load, it gives a signal to the washing machine’s main controller board and then the controller instructs the motor at what speed it should rotate. If the sensor detects a huge load, the drum speed will be adjusted accordingly and the same is applicable when the load is less. So due to this variable speed, power is saved.

Inverter Technology in the washing machine uses a variable frequency drive ( VFD) or brushless motor that is capable of varying the motor speed based on the wash load.

Typically Inverter technology is available in the front loading washing machines with direct drive technology( Found in the top-loading washing machine too but only in the top-end model)

Again there is a reason why inverter technology is used with the direct drive. As we all might know that in the direct drive technology, the motor is directly connected to the drum shaft. There is no belt drive, no pully and that is why there is fewer number of moving parts. Due to less moving parts, your washing machine will consume less power and the inverter technology will complement the direct drive to save more power.

What Is Smart Inverter Technology?

Well, Smart inverter technology is a generic term that is used when inverter technology is used with direct-drive technology. The word ” Smart” means that the machine is smart enough to control the drum speed based on the wash load.

LG is the first company to come up with this offering. In fact, most of the top end LG washing machines come with smart inverter technology.

Advantages Of Inverter Technology In Washing Machine

  • Reduce wastes of power
  • Save you from excessive power bill
  • Machine life increases as the motor do not always run at full speed
  • Less vibration as there are fewer moving parts
  • Frequent servicing is not required as you are not putting excessive load on the moto
  • Machines with inverter technology and direct drive technology do produce very low noise

Disadvantages Of Inverter Technology In Washing Machine

  • Washing machine with inverter technology is very costly
  • The wight of the washing machine gets increased
  • Servicing cost is very high
  • More maintenance and care is required
